I was in University when I first read about Jamie and Claire, from the Outlander series, written by Diana Gabaldon. In fact, I may have failed a quiz because my head was stuck dreaming about the Scottish Highlands *I have a wild imagination, what can I say*. And if you haven't seen the show yet, I'm just saying...
So you can say it’s been a lifelong dream to bring the essence of one of my favourite books to life. And I did, with the help of an amazing team of TALENTED Ladies. On a particularly windy day in October, we all converged on a quaint horse farm in Delta to basically take over the grounds for an afternoon. I still look at the pictures and shed a wee tear (see what I did there!) on the hard work and love we put into this. With the help of my awesome friend Tarina, of Coastal Fern weddings, we captured the day with Meghan Hemstra Photography, florals by Postmark Flowers, hair and makeup by Laura Taylor Makeup and Hair, and sweets by April Bakes Stuff! And of course special thanks to our beautiful models Amarah, Dianna, Shannon and Meghan for posing in the gale force winds and random patches of rain. Your mascara is fine!
As you go, you meet people along the way. And with an incredible eye for catching those perfect moments, Meghan was one of those people. Her knack for capturing the slight movement of the grass in the wind, Amarah’s giggles when the ponies kept trying to eat her bouquet, making the food look even MORE delicious, and highlighting the inner beauty of our gorgeous models was more then we could have imagined. Oh, and her pupper is super adorbs!
Scotland (and the Highlands) is on my bucket list, so my inspiration came from books and films set in the UK. Soft brown leather, rich reds and greens, all mixed with bits of silver accents against a beautiful field as a back drop.
We layered up the pieces to give height to the table, and to better show the florals.
Tip: odds are better than evens. I always like to set up my ‘scapes with uneven amounts of things (for example: the three silver candlesticks). It draws the eye down to the rest of the table, and creates a “woosh effect” (my not so ‘technical term!).
Other examples of layering, the settings. We started with a silver charger, and topped it with a fern leaf and the favour. To show off the favour, we knotted the white linen napkin and laid the favour on top. Simple and easy way to impress guests with wow-factor.
Tip, part II: your layers and odd-numbered items still need blank space. Meaning it’s a good idea to have a few clear spaces on the table to allow the viewer/guest the opportunity to see all the little treasures.
Consider all the layers with this delicious display of sweets! We tiered the parfait cups on the right, backed up the two bottles against the book on the left, and layered the flowers on the books, with the cake leading down the sugar cookies *Woosh* Although this seems busy, notice the front is clean. Breathing space!
Shannon, from Postmark Flowers provided the floral pieces for our Table, and Models. I met Shannon through Tarina a few events ago and she jumped on the opportunity to assist. And we are so glad she did! She is beyond talented and provided the most beautiful creations.
We wanted to go for an organic, loose shape for the bouquets, with pastoral vibes…think fern, moss, thistle, waxflowers, berries, greens and more!
Our lovely models show two very different examples of bouquets. Meghan’s bouquet, while smaller, shows off an eclectic mix of greens and neutral florals that stand out against the field. Pure elegance. Shannon’s, on the other hand, is a bountiful…handful! I promise we didn’t swipe any from the local fields. Overflowing with lush greens and reds florals, this bouquet has wow-factor all over it.
Both Amarah and Dianna, and Luna the Horse, are wearing floral crowns. Which I love. This fad is not going away! Both include a mix of greens and natural florals with thistle accents.
Laura Taylor was our makeup artist, and she transformed these already stunning gems into models for the day. The goal was to show off different looks: more natural on Meghan, elevate the drama on Shannon, and crank up the volume with Dianna. Amarah, well she’s cute as a button and got some gloss for her lil pout.
My favourite part!! And personally, taste-tested the cookies. Like 8 of them. No shame!! I’ve known April for a few years now and she is a phenomenal baker. We asked her to create something modern from the traditional desserts you would see, and she did not disappoint. The colourfully layered Raspberry Cranachan, the buttery shortbread and that robust CHOCOLATE bundt cake. Perfect with a wee nip.

With two sets of Shannons, two sets of Meghans, three dogs, two kitties, eight horses, one baby Mini pony...Ach, I think Ms. Gabaldon would be proud!
